Geography

Ethiopia is a landlocked country situated in the Horn of Africa. Ethiopia is bordered by Eritrea to the north, Sudan to the west, Kenya to the south, Somalia to the east and Djibouti to the northeast. It has an estimated population of over 85 million and the capital is Addis Ababa. Main attractions include mountainous parks such as Simien Mountain National Park and Bale Mountain National Park, 1,000-year-old Christian ceremonies and the ancient ruins of Lalibela. Lalibela is an ancient settlement that includes 11 superb, medieval churches. The dark passageways and hidden crypts and grottoes were carved into the red volcanic rock nearly a millennium ago by the Zagwe Dynasty. Today this ancient world remains frozen in stone. Lalibela is a World Heritage site and ranks among the greatest religious-historical sites in the Christian world.

Tourist Attractions

The Simien Mountains will leave you astonished. You can trek all the way to 4,200m on this mountain range. Families of gelada baboons can be spotted in this range and they are often friendly to humans. Bale Mountains National Park is known for its wildlife. Over 60 mammal species and 260 bird species have been recorded here, including dozens of endemic species. Rounded rock pinnacles dot the ridges while rivers cut deep gorges. In the lower hills, you will walk among local shepherds and farmers in this authentic rural environment.

Airport and transportation

Ethiopia can be reached overland or you can fly into Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa. The airport is only 11 miles from the city centre and it is quite large in comparison to other airports in this part of Africa. There are many daily flights from destinations around the continent and a direct route connects Addis Ababa with London.

Accommodation

Tourism is relatively common in Ethiopia, so a range of accommodation options can be found in most areas of the country. There are a handful of high end luxury hotels, but when seeing the mountains and wilderness many prefer to stay in a tent.
