Travel Guide Kenya
Geography
Kenya is best known for its stunning scenery, tropical coastline and savannah plains. People travel from far and wide to experience the magic of the wildlife and landscape of the Serengeti. However, the cities of Nairobi and Mombasa should not be overlooked. Kenya is an eclectic land of tribal lifestyles, nature and bustling cities full of nightlife, great restaurants and history, but caution in times of political turmoil is necessary.
Tourist Attractions
Masai Mara National Reserve is an immense natural reserve that borders the Serengeti. It has wildlife such as wildebeest, lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, various antelope and hippos, among other species. The endless hillsides, trees and rivers coupled with charming safari camps and hotels make this an unforgettable location for a nature experience. One of Kenya’s other main safari destinations is Amboseli National Park. It also boasts a stunning array of wildlife including huge herds of elephants. If you wish to escape the crowds and observe wildlife in a more tranquil setting you could head for the more isolated Kakamega Forest Reserve. This is home of the red-tailed monkey, black and white colobus monkey and the blue monkey. Marsabit National Park and Reserve and Aberdare National park are also great options.
Capital and Important places
The capital, Nairobi, has the country’s best accommodation and finest restaurants, making it the ideal base from which to venture to Kenya’s other regions. Nightlife is curious and varied, with bars and cafés to suit all tastes. Attractions in the city include the superb National Museum, Snake Museum and interesting National Archives.
Airport and transportation
It is best to arrive in Kenya via air as overland borders can be dangerous. Jomo Kenayatta International Airport is only nine miles from the city centre. It is a large airport that offers routes connecting with many European and African destinations.
Accommodation
When it comes to hotels, Kenya has a wide range of options. Nairobi and many of the national parks have high end luxury options, but moderately priced clean hotels are also available in many locations. Inexpensive hotels are available in some cities but may not be safe.
