Geography

Madagascar is an island nation in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa. It is the fourth largest island in the world. Nature is the main attraction here as the island is home to five per cent of the world’s plant and animal species, with 80 per cent being endemic to Madagascar. The capital of Antananarivo is a great city, and the beach area of Nosy Be is a very popular spot. Analamazoatra Reserve is like no other nature park and cannot be missed.

Capital and Important places

Antananarivo is a bustling place with activity in every corner. Stalls here sell every kind of goods imaginable. People selling their wares are squeezed into the tiniest nooks and crannies and sometimes spill out into traffic. Fresh produce, raw meat, embroidered linen, electronics, leather goods and handicrafts are all available in this fast-paced and unique capital. Nosy Be is Madagascar’s busiest and most popular tourist resort. Here you can enjoy the beach and unique wildlife while also taking in the surreal landscape along with a number of great cafés and restaurants.

Tourist Attractions

Analamazoatra Reserve is where you can focus on the unique wonder that is Madagascar’s wildlife. Here you can see more than 70 different kinds of lemur and a plethora of other truly unique animals and plants – large and small. Even travellers who don’t fancy themselves as nature enthusiasts find themselves awed by the wonder of this park.

Airport and transportation

Madagascar can be entered by ferry or airplane. The airport is called Morondava Airport and it runs regular flights of small planes from close by cities. Once on the island, most travellers get around by car.

Accommodation

A wide range of accommodation options exist in Madagascar. There are some very fine hotels in the capital and beach areas. Most hotels in Madagascar maintain a local style. They are generally well maintained, clean and friendly.
