Geography

Malawi is known for its amazing scenic beauty and lovely people. Here there are great national parks and one of the continent’s biggest lakes, Lake Malawi. Many travellers choose to stay here for extended holiday or for months on end. There is a national park built around Lake Malawi. It is called Lake Malawi National Park. There are some offshore islands on the park and Cape Maclear Peninsula. Activities here include boating, looking at animals and watching birds. There is also some decent fresh water snorkelling.

Capital and Important places

Malawi’s capital city is called Lilongwe. There are many cool sights here. One of the most pleasant parts is the Old Town. Here there are bustling markets with utilities and live chickens. The new area is quite modern with buildings and shopping. There is also an inner city nature sanctuary. Here, there are 150 hectares of walking trails and forest. It is great for walks and picnics, but be careful here at night.

Tourist Attractions

Cape Maclear has great beaches, food and beer from beachside barbecues and bars. People come here to enjoy swimming, kayaking and diving. Two of the main islands here are Likoma and Chizimula. Both islands have many mango and baobab trees as well as crystal clear water and lovely beaches.

Airport and transportation

Entering Malawi by plane is advisable as overland borders can be dangerous. Lilongwe International Airport runs routes into Malawi from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Kenya and a few more African destinations. It is a small airport, but it functions quite efficiently.

Accommodation

Accommodation in Malawi can range from very rustic to four-star hotels. Even simple hotels in Malawi are often delightfully charming and worth checking out.
